A Little Wine, Cheese, and Sweets...

30-12-2010 om 17:45 by Amanda Potter

070For the holidays, my husband and I decided to take a little taste of Limburg to our family residing in the United States. Luckily for us, I had been introduced only a few weeks before to Glimburger, a Maastricht shop that stocks Limburgish products from within 50 km of its location, including Limburgish Belgium and Germany. With the help of the extremely friendly propiretor, we selected flavorful beers, award-winning chocolates, and fresh baked stroopwafels with which to impress the family back home.

Wine & Beer

Limburg has many vineyards and my first taste of local wine was a Maastricht Reisling from this store. It was very good, and very distinct from the the ones we've had from Germany. On the recommendation of the store's owner, we purchased a dark beer made just over the Belgium border for my Aunt and Uncle, and an extra strong Christmas beer for ourselves. His advice about what to purchase and how many of the beers are made and change over time really helped us make the right selections.

Chocolate & Sweets

Naturally I purchased some freshly baked stroopwafels for my father-in-law, but it was simply good fortune that brought me into Glimburger in time to purchase chocolates by lafeve an award-winning chocolate maker. Made locally, these chocolates are made with organic ingredients and contain a variety of very Dutch flavors, like appelstroop. I'm sure the friends we purchases a box for will really enjoy them. The chance to sample these special chocolates made the decision even easier.

Mustard & Spreads

Glimburger has an impressive selection of jams, mustards, stroops, and more from the region, but the owner has an agreement with another local store not to carry duplicate products from within Maastricht itself. For the really local spreads, you should visit Adriaan De Smaakmaker, where they literally make the mustards and spreads behind the counter (when they aren't using the space to pack Christmas boxes). Run by a couple, the husband is British, so they also make some British foods such as mint jelly, lemon curds, and Christmas pudding. Adriaan De Smaakmaker is along the same street as Glimburger so it's worth stopping in both places to get a microcosm taste of the Limburgish region.

Glimburger and Adriaan De Smaakmaker are located at Sint Pieterstraat 52a and Sint Pieterstraat 36 in Maastricht respectively.

Hello Amanda,
I am a freelance writer from Toronto, Canada coming to The Netherlands in October. I am interested in the vineyards and would like to know whether there are other interesting sights. Are the vineyards and the wine mature enough to write about? Do you know of any Canadians living in the region?
Are there any articles or websites (in English) on the wines and vineyards? Are Maastricht and Limburgh near each other?

Thank you,

Merle
