Coming to a Shopping Center Near You

08-06-2010 om 21:56 by Amanda Potter

098For those in the Maastricht area with a taste for Swedish meatballs and flat-packed furniture (or the general need for same), the nearest Ikea is located just outside Heerleen as part of Woonboulevard.  Unfortunately, for a long time it has been a trial to reach the store by public transportation; involving both a train ride past the shopping area and then a bus back. No longer. As of 13 June, the new Heerlen Woonboulevard station is available serve your furniture shopping needs.

Shopping the Woonboulevard

The Woonboulevard is essentially a huge strip mall with several large store and many smaller ones catering to your home and garden needs. Most of the stores sell furniture, lighting, and other housing goods, making it a one stop shop for busy people needing to kit out a new home.  There is also a large pet store and gardening store in the area.

Ikea is my store of choice for furniture and housing goods, since as expats with a term contract, we don’t need heirloom quality furnishings in our little apartment.  With the new train station in place it will be easier to check out Ikea for kitchen utensils and other small goods we’d like to buy there but are too small for the more round about trip.

Heerlen Woonboulevard Station

The new train station is situated within view of the shopping plaza and is served by the same trains that travel between Heerleen and Maastricht. It is small, but functional and sure to be busy once officially open for business.

Travel Alternatives

Of course if you wish to pick up a lot of furniture from Ikea or one of the other housing stores in the area, you may be better off renting a van or truck.  There are several options available and depending on what you need, the rental costs can be comparable to the cost of delivery (at least in my limited experience).  Ikea also has trucks and trailers you can borrow from them, but you will have to drive them back the same day.  Fortunately, the new train station finally makes that a viable option.
