My 5 Favorite Places to Eat in Maastricht

12-05-2010 om 11:22 by Amanda Potter

Dan and I like to try new restaurants whenever we go out to eat, but after a year we’ve found a handful of regular spots for those occasions when we want something familiar and enjoyable. These are, of course, my favorites. Share your picks in the comments section.

John Mullin’s Pub: Brugstraat 50, 6221 ED Maaastricht. For the biggest cups of coffee you can get in Maastricht, go to John Mullin’s Pub. We enjoy this Irish-style pub for the dark wood atmosphere, good lunch fare, and tolerant nature. We like to work in cafes on our various writing projects, and John Mullin’s is respectful of that so long as we buy something. Also quite enjoyable is their Afternoon Tea, which comes with a pot of tea and a larger platter of sandwiches and sweets.

Kaishu Japans Restaurant: Jodenstraat 26, 6211 ER Maastricht. We love sushi, so when we found all-you-can-eat sushi at Kaishu we were thrilled. The restaurant is just off Grotestraat near the VVV and their sushi variety and flavor is excellent. If you are not interested in raw fish, they also have many cooked dishes like tempura. The prices are reasonable for sushi and all they ask is that you clean your plate.

Pinky’s: Grote Straat, kitty-corner from the VVV. Pinky’s is our favorite place for dessert, a snack, or pretty much any other time Dan can convince me to walk past the take-away stand. Part candy store, part fresh waffle and ice cream shop, Pinky’s makes the best chocolate filled waffles in Maastricht. The waffles are warm and sweet. The chocolate is dark and rich. A perfect combination. We always skip the powdered sugar; too messy.

Chocolate Company: Onze Lieve Vrouweplein 2, 6211 HD Maastricht. Continuing the chocolate theme, Dan and I enjoy a visit to the local Chocolate Company share a chocolate fondue or hot coco over a warm brownie on the weekends. While probably not strictly lunch, the chocolate and sweets are delicious and you get to take the extra fondue home afterward. The front part of the Chocolate Company is a chocolate shop, so you can stock up.

Any Vrijthof Cafe: When I want to experience eating outside or am in the mood for bitterballen, we swing down to the Vrijthof and pick one of the dozen or so cafes along the square. I enjoy Dutch cuisine, but not so much that we’ve selected a favorite place for it yet. Instead this one is all about the ambiance. We’ll stop in on the Vrijthof for a beer, coffee, or occasionally lunch so we can watch the city wander by and catch any events happening on the square.
