Normally if you wanted to taste your way through the restaurants in Maastricht in just one weekend, you’d have to bring a big doggy bag. But this weekend the restaurants are coming to you. Or at least they are congregating on the Vrijthof under the auspices of this year’s Preuvenemint where you can pick and chose flavors from the city in one location for 4 days.

A cultural mainstay of Maastricht, Preuvenemint is an annual culinary event intended to bring together people who love food and the cooks that love to feed them. Dan and I attended the event last year with my in-laws and had an enjoyable evening tasting various local Dutch foods including herring, mussels, and pork sate. The food was tasty, if a little pricy, and as we were traveling in a group it was fun to share plates and enjoying a wide variety. A mix of live music rounded out the evening and gave the entire event a festive feeling.
This year the theme is “Colorful Tasting” and the various restaurants will be adopting ethnic cuisines from all over the world. So instead of just local flavors, this year you’ll get a chance to try from from places like Turkey, Italy, and the Philippines. Personally I can’t wait to try something new. Living in Maastricht has already been great for my culinary horizons and my stomach is always up to stretching them a little more. I do wonder if they’ll have an “American” booth, and if it’ll be at all authentic.
In addition to the food, Preuvenemint always has a schedule of live music available and this year is no exception. A quick glance at the schedule shows a real variety including swing, a Michael Jackson impersonator, African drums, and world music from 3 continents. So if music make the meal for you, check out the (in Dutch) listings and plan your visits around your favorite tunes.

Preuvenemint 2010 will run from 6 pm on 26 August through midnight on 29 August. Drinks are generally 1 preuvenelap (ticket), and food starts at 2 preuvenelap, but can run up to 10 for fancier dishes. Proceeds of the event are donated to various charities.
