Sushi Review: Take Sushi

14-09-2011 om 12:00 by Amanda Potter

075As the self-proclaimed first sushi train restaurant in the region, Take Sushi in Meersen is a tasty and unique way to eat sushi in a casual setting. Easily reached by a short train or bus from Maastricht, Dan and I took advantage of a recent SocialDeal coupon to try it out.

Take Sushi has a small, unassuming store front. As you walk in however you’ll immediately notice the sushi chefs behind a bar with a long conveyor belt (or train) covered with small color-coded plates of sushi. The method is simple. You are seated and then you may take what you’d like from the train. When you pay, your bill is based on the number and color of the plates you have piled next to you. Hot menu items and special requests can be made through your waiter or directly to the sushi chefs. We found the sushi to be fresh, although the variety of plates was slow to change as there were only a handful of tables filled when we visited. While not the best sushi I’ve had in the Netherlands, it was very good and the a la carte train gives you a chance to try new things in a way that some “all you can eat” menus don’t. We sat at the sushi bar and in small groups this is probably the best way to get the full experience.

Take Sushi is run by a friendly Dutch couple. The owner was also our server and she spoke passionately about the food they serve there. One thing she was quick to point out is that this sushi train is sushi from a Dutch perspective and for a Dutch palette. The Nigiri is made without wasabi to make it more accessible to people who don’t like spiciness (you may supplement from the small jar provided on request), and several menu items were nontraditional. We tried a “carpaccio” nigiri with beef and parmesan which was flavorful and unique (to me anyway), and a large roll filled with fruit and peanut butter. The menu even has a rolled pannenkoeken sushi with no rice in it at all.

The owners are also still experimenting with new rolls and hot dishes, so if you’d like to taste test some of their efforts, you’d best make several trips. With good quality food and average a la carte sushi prices, the sushi train at Take Sushi is worth a trip or two.
